The ‘miscommunication’ that cost Lakers Dwight Howard – ClutchPoints

Former Los Angeles Lakers big man Dwight Howard has decided to part ways with L.A., and has reportedly now put pen to paper on a new deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. Prior to signing with the Sixers, Howard was believed to have been on track to signing an extension with the Lakers. That never came through, and as it turns out, it was brought about by a clear case of miscommunication.

According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, Howard’s botched extension with L.A. “came down to miscommunication somewhere.” He also details how Howard was apparently kept in the dark while the Lakers tried to iron out their offer:

Lakers management informed Howard’s agent that they had to consult with team ownership and seek approval before making an official offer, sources said. Howard waited for nearly an hour without hearing back, sources said. Communication was strictly between the Lakers front office and Howard’s agent, sources said.

Howard was supposedly already under the impression that a $3 million deal was already on the table, which prompted him to send out his now-deleted tweet indicating his intention to stay in Hollywood. As the Lakers brass took their time on Howard’s deal, the Sixers pounced, with reports also stating that superstar big man Joel Embiid was also involved in Howard’s recruitment.

It remains unclear if the Lakers were really going to offer Howard an extension, but at this point, that’s water under the bridge. They have since moved on, and have picked up a tremendous replacement in reigning Sixth Man of the Year winner Montrezl Harrell.
